Breeding policy

Breeding and rearing of pedigree dogs is the bedplate of the operation in the Swedish kennel club. In the statutes first paragraph, which states the goal of the activities, shows the importance of breeding through the text;

"to generate interest and promote the breeding of mentally and physically healthy, userate, hunting manner and exterior adequate pure breed dogs".

Dog breeding and the developement of the pedigree dogs is based on the choices the breeders make with regards to the animals and how they use them. Genetic variation is a prerequisite for different dog breeds and their opportunities to adapt to future demands. Therefore, the dogbreeding and the developement of different breeds should be goal oriented, long-term and sustainable. By sustainable it is meant that it will not lead to shortcommings in the animals health, mentallity or function and that it will not drain the breed of genetic variation.

Breeding and rearing should also be in compliance with animal welfare legislation and the basic rules of the Swedish Kennel Club.

Dogs with severe sickness or handicap should not be used for breeding. Mating combinations that at the basis of available information increases the risk of severe handicap or sickness of the offspring should be avoided.

The Swedish kennel club in cooperation with the specialized clubs are responsible for breed formation, breed developement and breed attendance.
